We support clients through all phases of a project — from early-phase development to troubleshooting during production.

Our typical projects include:

  • Scale predictions for oil and gas wells (from reservoirs to process inlet), topside processes, and water treatment and injection systems

  • Evaluation of water and PVT analysis reports

  • Advanced scale predictions for complex systems, including:

    • Fields with commingled production from multiple wells or tie-ins from several field with varying flow rates and conditions

    • Assessment of scale potential in oil and gas topside processes, stabilisation trains, de-salting processes, and produced water/seawater injection

  • Life-time scale simulations using our ScaleSimPro tool, enabling full-field simulations with multiple wells and processes to evaluate scale potential across all locations and over time

  • H₂S scavenger impact assessments - modelling topside processes with H₂S scavenger injection to track H₂S removal and impact on scale risk in the process and produced water

  • MEG loop simulations, including evaluation of chemistry, scale potential, salt precipitation, and pH stabilisation in MEG regeneration and reclamation systems—often vital information for design and operation of MEG loops and processes

  • Troubleshooting of scale and salt precipitation issues

  • General chemical evaluations, covering water behaviour, gas solubility, H₂S, pH, and related challenges

Personnel

Baard Kaasa is Co-Founder, CEO, and Principal Consultant at Scale Consult. He holds an MSc (Siv.Ing.) in Chemistry (1994) and a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry (1998) from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). During his PhD, he developed the scale simulation code previously called MultiScale, now further refined and marketed by Scale Consult as ScaleSim™ and the process simulation tool ScaleSimPro™.

Baard began his career as a Production Engineer at Statoil's Åsgard field, where he spent 3.5 years overseeing well testing, PVT and water sampling, and production logging, planning, and optimisation. In 2004, he joined Statoil's research centre in Trondheim, focusing on MEG regeneration and reclamation, gas processing, gas–liquid separation, and acid gas treatment (CO₂ removal), scale, and general chemistry and thermodynamics. His research specialised in hydrate inhibition, salt precipitation in glycol systems, MEG regeneration and reclamation, and general MEG loop chemistry. Since 2010, he has served as a specialist in upstream gas production.

Since 2012, Baard has worked as CEO and consultant at Scale Consult, helping oil and gas companies and operators primarily in Norway, the UK, and Brazil, as well as several other countries. With over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, Baard provides comprehensive support across the full production lifecycle—from early-stage field development and facility design to operational troubleshooting and production optimisation. His unique combination of field operations experience, research expertise, and software development enables him to deliver practical, science-based solutions to complex production chemistry challenges. He specialises in integrating scale predictions with production planning, designing fit-for-purpose MEG systems, optimising chemical treatment strategies, and resolving operational issues related to scale, hydrates, and water chemistry. Baard's hands-on approach combines advanced thermodynamic modelling with real-world operational insight, helping clients make informed decisions that balance technical performance with economic considerations.
